چکیده

In IEEE 802.11-based WLANs, nodes sharing an access point (AP) have equal opportunity to access the link (or channel) via a random access MAC protocol. As a consequence, a node sending more packets shows a longer delay than other nodes sending a lower number of packets. This is fair enough for besteffort service, since the communication cost is not determined by the amount of traffic sent. In a commercial service with per-packet based payment, however, this may be unfair for nodes sending more packets, since each packet has the same transmission cost, and the payment is proportional to the amount of traffic. In this paper, we address this unfairness problem in IEEE 802.11 and propose a modification of the current standard MAC protocol to achieve a fair delay regardless of the amount of packets sent. It can be implemented with both notificationbased and estimation-based approaches. We show via simulation that both approaches can achieve weighted delay fairness among nodes with different access priorities and sending rates.

Turning Hidden Nodes into Helper Nodes in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN Networks

To enhance the performance of IEEE 802.11 WLANs in the presence of hidden terminal problem, we propose a protocol that allows non-hidden stations to help each other retransmit faster whenever possible. Opposite to other approaches, the new protocol benefits from the hidden terminal problem to improve the performance of DCF, which is the basic operation of IEEE 802.11. The new protocol is compat...

Performance Study of IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN under High Traffic Conditions

The IEEE 802.11b medium access control (MAC) protocol is gaining widespread popularity as a layer-2 protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs). A good MAC protocol for WLANs should provide an efficient mechanism to share a limited wireless channel bandwidth, together with high bandwidth utilization and fairness in serving all stations. In this paper we study the performance of IEEE 802.1...

Interleaved carrier sense multiple access: an efficient MAC protocol for ad hoc wireless networks

Wireless networks are inherently limited by the bandwidth constraint. MAC protocols for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) play the important role of arbitrating and statistically multiplexing the transmission requests of various stations contending to access the channel. The performance of IEEE 802.11 degrades in Ad hoc networks because of the presence of hidden and exposed terminals. To cou...

A QoS-enabled MAC architecture for prioritized service in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

–In this paper we propose a novel media access control (MAC) architecture to support differentiated service in IEEE 802.11 WLAN. By employing the MAC-core as base and different adaptors as add-ons in this architecture, the resulting MAC can provide prioritized services with different delays and throughputs. Our simulation studies show that the resulting MAC protocols based on this architecture ...
